Obituary of Russell P. Scanio

Russell P. Scanio, 64, of Eden, NY died Tuesday, February 14, 2012 at home after a 9 year battle with Multiple Myeloma.
He was born in Dunkirk, NY on February 26th, 1947, son of Anna (nee: LoRusso) and the late Ross Scanio.
Russ attended Kenmore East High School and graduated in 1963.
He served with the United States Air Force and then with the United States Army for a total of 22 years of service. He spent most of his service as one of the most prolific Army recruiters in New York State. Through Russ's military service he was awarded many humanitarian and meritorious medals, including the Army National Guard Master Recruiter Badge and the Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star.
After retiring from the Army, he went on to teach JROTC at South Park High School in Buffalo, NY. He was also active in the Erie County Sheriff's Reserve Division where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant and headed up the Erie County Sheriff's Explorer Program. This became one of the best training programs in the country performing over 100 details each year including such missions as Sheriff's Inauguration, St. Patrick's Day Parades, Variety Club Telethons, and the Erie County Fair. They also facilitated numerous Operation: Safe Child sites leading to the computer fingerprinting of over 25,000 children in Erie County.
Russ was also a real estate broker for over 15 years with multiple agencies.
He is survived by wife Karen L. (nee: Urbaniak), daughters Cheri, Dawn (Jeremy) Kemler, and Christina, brothers Peter and Lawrence. He was the loving Grandfather of three grandsons, Evan, Jordan, and Nolan.
Family invites friends to call at the Laing Funeral Home 2724 West Church Street, Eden, NY 14057 from 7-9PM on Saturday, February 18, 2012 and 2-4PM, 7-9PM on Sunday, February 19, 2012.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, February 20, 2012 at 10am in Immaculate Conception Church, Eden, NY. A military burial will follow at Lakeside Cemetery 4810 Camp Road, Hamburg, NY.
