Gilbert G. Winter, age 83, died Tuesday, April 28, 2015. He was born on August 2, 1931 in a farm house on the New Oregon Road. He was born on a 23 acre farm that sat on the 18 Mile Creek in the Southeastern corner of the Town Of Eden. His parents; George F. and Julia Winter had built the house during the Depression. Gilbert, along with his six brothers and sisters, Howard, Charlotte Williams, June Bowman, Marjorie Brown, Arlene Fox and George Jr. worked in their childhood and years after on the almost self-sufficient farm. Gilbert, along with his brother George, belonged to 4-H and raised beef cattle to show at the Hamburg County Fair. Gilbert’s father worked the farm land with a team of horses until 1939 when they purchased their first tractor. In Gilbert’s younger days he had to walk to the school in Clarksburg. On the sunny days he would rather have been farming, so his sister Marjorie had to pick him up and carry him to school. He farmed with his father and brothers; growing many vegetables. In 1950, along with his father and brother George, they bought a 200 acre farm in Orchard Park, NY In 1952 he married Marjorie L. King. Together they had three children; David, Kathy and Jeff. The family continued to live in Eden, NY. He also is Grandfather of 4 and great grandfather of 8 ½. His family helped on the farm more and more as time went on. In 1964 his brother George left the farm to join the Operating Engineers, Local 17. Gilbert also drove school bus for Eden Central School for 38 years. After retiring from School Bus Driving, Gilbert turned over the family farm to his son David and his family. The farm he worked so hard on is still in operation today. He was a very active guy. He became Assistant Chief of Eden Fire Company #1 and later became Chief for 3 years. He was also Past Chairman of the Eden Fire Departments Corn Festival Corn and French Fry Stand #2. He enjoyed bowling, Euchre, fishing, horse shoe pitching, snowmobiling, casino visits and going to the farmers market. He also enjoyed socializing with his friends over a cocktail. He will be greatly missed, but never will run out of stories about him. Family invites friends to call 7-9PM on Thursday and 2-4PM and 7-9PM on Friday at the Laing Funeral Home Inc. 2724 W.
