Mr. Fried was my band/ music instructor at Hutch Tech HS from 1989-1993. Prior to joining band, I was not having a successful start to high school. I was considering transferring to another school. I decided to give band a try. I had never picked up an instrument before, but Mr. Fried was happy to give me the opportunity. It changed my life. My band memories: early mornings in the Hutch Tech basement, marching band practice in our seats, yearly trips to exotic locals such as Buckhannon, WV, and our great end of year picnics were all because of Mr. Fried. He always went above and beyond, with patience and grace. Even after all these years if I hear a piece of music we played in orchestra, I can be transported back to that time and those great memories.
Mr. Fried you were truly one of the greats. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Fried family. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mr. Fried was my Band leader @ Southside High, there is so much to say.
Mr. Fried not only impacted my life with musical direction but brought together a group of people whom I still call friends, I am grateful for his direction and all he did with a bunch of city kids, he took us many places and had faith in us to enter us in competitions with other well funded and developed programs and because of him we faired quite well. I still make music my life and have been able to pursue music since leaving High School and have him to thank, I truly will miss him and have missed him and think of him very often, Thank You Mr. Floyd F. Fried for giving us not only music direction but many, many wonderful memories (band parties) and friendships, your commitment was amazing, always there bright and early everyday and leaving very late everyday, all the lesson passes, thank you for teaching me how to read music and letting me not read and just play, also thanks to Mrs. Fried for letting him do this for us kids...I truly will miss you Floyd...I just hope someday, somehow our young can experience a Mr. Fried...
Prayers to Mrs. Fried and the whole Fried Family.

I remember when you asked me if I would consider being the drum major for Hutch-Tech's Band. I also remember wondering, what the heck is a drum major? You had enough confidence in me to do something that I had no clue of what it entailed. Thank you for that confidence, and this is the same confidence that I'm instilling in my daughter as she pursues the drums. You will be truly missed, and I send my condolences to your family. R.I.P. I'm another one of Mr. Fried's former students from Hutch Tech. Just wanted to say that he made a welcoming place in the basement band room for all the weirdos and misfits in the band -- there were times when I could hang out there in free periods when I felt like I couldn't go anywhere else. I hope he new how much we appreciated him.

To the family...so sorry for your loss. One of my memories of Floyd was how much he loved cars & music. I had just gotten my Lincoln MKZ & was talking to Floyd about the great stereo in it...well he wanted to go sit in it & listen to it...he loved it (we listened to Josh Groban...extremely loud too)! Then he took me on a little joy ride in the Lotus...boy did he love that Lotus! Here's Floyd whipping through the gears & my 6'4" body trying to get comfortable in those seats! What a great guy...he will be missed. I'm very sorry for your loss.

Floyd was my mentor, a true friend and hero. Every life he touched was made better. His incredible energy, insight, dedication, patience and understanding made every challenge easier to handle. Whenever Floyd was on the scene, you knew everything would be OK. My fondest memories are of his summer band camp at Southside, culminating with an appearance at a Bill's preseason game. I learned more from Floyd that summer, than I learned in all of my college years. Thanks Floyd.Thank you to your wonderful family for sharing you with us, all those years.

Mr. Fried was one of the most dedicated teachers I've ever had the pleasure to work with and I will be forever grateful for the time and effort he gave to us at Hutch Tech. I was in both concert and marching band and the concerts, pep rallies, competitions out of state, and rehearsals were always a good time. Mr. Fried had enough confidence in us to make us fearless when it came to learning new music and we became not just exceptional band members but also a family. Long lasting friendships formed in Tech's band and we all share memories of a good man, with a good heart. Thank you Mr. Fried, God bless you and your family...

Mr Fried was a true example of the profound influence a teacher can have on the lives of students. His band members felt like members of an exclusive club where the requirements were hard work, respect, and oh yes- being able to clap out the rhythms on his awesome note cards! I often think, how do you judge your life? I believe it is in the way you have touched lives. I was Mr. Fried's first student teacher at Southside H.S. I always said I learned more about being a teacher in those 6 weeks than 4 years of college. I used his example and guidance throughout my career and often asked his advice. I on several occasions was asked to assist him on band trips. I was honored to do so. I will always remember him as a Master Teacher who gave his all to the kids. He touched lives on a daily basis. He was my mentor, my friend and my collegue. I will be always grateful for having known him. The world is a better place because Floyd Fried was part of it.
To his beloved Micky and children, my condolences, you all are in my thougts and prayers. He will be missed.

I had the honor of being in band at Southside High school in the 70's ,my son at Hutch Tech in the 90's under Mr. Fried.
I had no musical talent when I joined, but he taught me to play the trombone of all things, who would have thought.
He had to put up with more of our teen age issues than our parents, but somehow he mananged to keep us all in line & I am a better person for knowing him.
Thanks MR.Fried, you will me missed, but never forgotten!

I am saddened to hear of the loss of Mr. Fried. He was such a wonderful teacher. He believed that you could do anything if you only tried. To this day I don’t know how he could stand listening to all those kids ‘trying’ (trying violin, trying clarinet, trying trumpet, trying the drums, etc.).
He made my High School experience at Southside HS so memorable, from concert band to stage band to even marching band. Who can forget playing at a Buffalo Bills preseason game, and running off the field as the team ran on.
I wish his family nothing but wonderful memories to keep him with them, he is always with me.

As a colleague, friend and fellow-musician, it was first and foremost, my Honor and Pleasure to have met, known and worked with Floyd.
Unique.
Special.
He has left all of us too soon. What I feel above all else right now is the loss.
That I wish to share with his family.
Western New York has lost one of its' Greatest Educators - in the Finest Tradition of the word. Legacy that obviously extends well beyond his death.
As a Man - there was not a better role model to stand before students, especially those gathered in a Band. What a Gift it Was - to So Many - that he also had both the joy of music in his soul and the ability to give it so freely to others.
A Life Well Lived Floyd.
There are not many graduates from the Eastman School of Music who pour that immense talent into our inner-city public schools here in WNY. There are not many who could.
It is hard to express how uplifting he was to his profession. It remains a model for all of us.
To his students: remember Always his gift to you.
How it made you something beyond what you thought you were. Treasure it now in his memory.
He did that for All of us.
Pass it on as best you can! and you can Live a life well lived.
Thank you Floyd - for everything.

Mr. Fried will always be in my heart as a teacher who used music to inspire teenagers so much that we didn't want to miss one day of band or one day of school. His joy was contagious. I lost my mother to cancer during my years at Southside and I can still feel the love and care of being in the bandroom in an atmosphere of caring and friendship. I made sure my own children joined the band as soon as possible. I hope Mr. Fried's family is encouraged by the joy and talent and the blessings he gave to many others.
