Obituary of Joseph J. Gugino

God called up a Master Gardener on Friday, July 30th. Joseph J Gugino, 90, passed away after a full life in Fredonia. Joe graduated in from Fredonia High School in 1937. Afterwards, he attended Ohio State University and Cornell University, each for a semester before he was drafted. A World War II Veteran, he proudly served his county for 5 years in the US Army where he was awarded several metals and honors. He served in France, Corsica and North Africa. After returning home to Fredonia, he resumed the family business that he left, Gugino Greenhouses. He and his late brother Louis Gugino successfully managed the business until they purchased it from their late father, John. Over the years, Joe served on many boards and for many florist organizations. He retired in 1984 after selling the business to the next generation, his nephew Jim Gugino. Jim and Nancy Gugino kept him involved in the greenhouse. Joe was married to Martha Gugino for 36 years before she passed away in 1978. They had one daughter, Katherine (Gugino) Ward who had his only grandchildren, Sara and Theresa Ward. He was blessed with a second wife, Patricia Martin and another daughter, Lindsay (Martin) Calalesina. Joe was a lifetime member of the Fredonia Beaver Club and the American Legion Post 59. He filled his days tending to his garden and greenhouse. He was survived by his wife Patricia Martin, daughter Lindsay (Ryan) Calalesina, daughter Katherine (David) Ward, Brother John (Peggy) Gugino of Statham, GA, Sister Theresa (Jack) Thew of Naperville, IL. He was also survived by many nieces and nephews as well as great nieces and nephews and even great great nieces and nephews, all of whom loved him very much. He was a wonderful man and will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. and of course the Carport Crew.
